Save Dawson Woods
Neighborhood kids always referred to these woods on Dawson
Street in S. Portland Maine as "Dawson Woods" so it seems fitting to
call this effort SaveDawsonWoods. Most
kids that grew up playing among these trees will recognize the name, so I think
it's fitting.

Solar panels are manufactured using minerals, toxic chemicals, and fossil fuels. In fact, solar panels require 10 times the minerals to deliver the same quantity of energy as a natural gas plant. Quartz, copper, silver, zinc, aluminium, and other rare earth minerals are mined with heavy diesel-powered machinery. In fact, 38% of the world’s industrial energy and 11% of total energy currently go into mining operations.
The Calvary Cemetery project, for instance, was proposed for a site in South Portland near Dawson Street and Broadway. It was slated to cover 10-acres with hundreds solar panels. It will involved bulldozing plants and wildlife habitat on a massive scale to replace them with concrete and steel. Local community groups opposed the project because it threatened views of the landscape and animals like over 135 different birds species, many squirrels, groundhogs, foxes, deer yes deer have been spotted in these woods, turtles and other wildlife, and hope proposed project will eventually be withdrawn as the rapid removal of these woods will not allow these animals to migrate from the area safely.
Community Concerns Rise Amid Tree Clearing
The tree-clearing efforts initiated by Portland International Jetport have left residents like Cassie Moon feeling anxious and neglected. Many Dawson Street residents were unaware that a 10-acre solar farm proposal was in play until they witnessed extensive tree removals. The sudden loss of trees has raised alarms about future developments on land owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.
